Vaal pleases the paraplegic community Ceramic bathroom producer, Vaal sanitaryware, prides itself on over 65 years of experience and innovation, with a high regard for practicality. With such an ethos it seems only fitting that Vaal teamed up with the Quadriplegic and Paraplegic Association of South Africa (QASA) to further extend their innovation and create a practical, yet aesthetically pleasing bathroom solution for a worthy community. There is a growing need in the sanitaryware industry to accommodate the requirements of an increasingly sophisticated market. To meet this need, Vaal continually revises their range of products and strives to create products that will accommodate the daily challenges faced by its end users. QASA members and Vaal embarked on a year long project in 2009. The project aimed at establishing exactly what practical hindrances afflict quadriplegic and paraplegic individuals where bathroom facilities are concerned. Vaal aimed at designing, developing and testing a new bathroom solution that would significantly aid disabled individuals to complete routine tasks in a more efficient and safe manner. Vaal went to great lengths, throughout the project, to insure that each and every need that was highlighted, by the assisting QASA members, was considered. Vaal initially produced a low level toilet that addressed the requirements specified but this did not adhere to Vaal’s aesthetic standards. With a desire to marry style and practicality Vaal went back to the design studio and developed a semi close coupled toilet that managed to take into account practicality while infusing it with style in an aesthetically pleasing design. The specially designed quad-para unit now exists under the name Pearl. The David Lewis guest house is specifically tailored to the needs of quadriplegic and paraplegic travellers. Situated in Johannesburg East, this facility was chosen as the inaugural sight of the Pearl. Vaal willingly donated and installed three Pearl toilets at the guest house. Coupled with the toilet units Vaal further donated three matching basins and managed to champion Chairman Industries to assist in the development and installation of a practical grab rail to further aid the guest house patrons. Cobra further assisted the venture by donating three sets of taps to compliment the basins. In a moving opening evening, held on the 26th of November last year, Ari Seirls, QASA National Director, the members of QASA together with Vaal and other suppliers shared an evening of camaraderie and celebration that marked the completion of the project and by all accounts the Pearl and completed bathroom solution was heralded as the most practical bathroom solution, for this audience, to date. It has been some months since the completion of the project but on the 18th of February, in a show of gratitude, Vaal’s Gerard Deeb, the sales team and plumber visited the David Lewis Guest house in order to accept a certificate of acknowledgement and thanks for their donation and dedication to QASA’s. Vaal is pleased to have been involved with QASA in the planning and development of a bathroom solution that will greatly assist the lives of its community and is excited about future prospects that may stem from this venture.
